CURVE FITTING

Posted by saleem

Features:

The "Curve Fitting" is a polynomial curve fitting software, which facilitates to find and plot polynomial equation, which passes through the user defined points. This software does 2 major roles. i) To find out the polynomial equation which passes through the points specified by the user and to plot that equation as a graph. Features such as zooming in, zooming out, zoom to a selected area and a free movement by mouse click & drag are included in this software, which helps to view the graph for any location at the required view depth. Also this software supports for taking a nice printout of the graph as well as to save the graph as a picture file.

How to start with Curve Fitting software ?

  • Open Genius Maker software and click "Curve Fitting" button. It opens the Curve Fitting software window.
  • Left side is the graph plotting area and the controls are given at the right side.
  • There are 3 frames on the right side.
    1. Add points - To add new points for the polynomial to pass through.
    2. Delete points - To delete a point from consideration.
    3. Viewing controls - To assist you to see various regions of the graph.

EXAMPLE:

  • Now let us take an example. Let us try to find the polynomial which passes through the following 4 points.

    • (2,1)
    • (0,0)
    • (-1,3)
    • (4,-3)
  • Type x = 2 and y = 1.
  • Click "Add Point"
  • You can see a small red circle along with the point serial number in the graph area at the location of (2,1). Also you can see a horizontal straight line passing through that point.
  • Just below the graph area, the equation for the simplest polynomial curve passing through this point is displayed. Now it reads as y = 1.
  • Let us add the second point. Type x = 0 and y = 0.

  • Click "Add Point"
  • You can see a small red circle along with the point serial number in the graph area at the location of (0,0). Also you can see a straight line passing through the above 2 points.
  • Just below the graph area, the equation for the simplest polynomial curve passing through this point is displayed. Now it reads as 2y = 1x.
  • Follow the similar procedure to add the third point (-1,3)

  • Now the graph becomes a parabola of equation 6y = 7x² - 11x.
  • Add the fourth point (4,-3)

  • Now the graph becomes a third order polynomial curve of equation 120y = -43x³ + 183x² - 134x.

How to start with Equations solver - Equation calculator software ?

  • Open Genius Maker software and click "Equations Solver" button. It opens the Equations Solver window as shown above.
  • It automatically shows a mathematical equation in the equation box, which was typed last time or the default equation.
  • Click "Find Solutions" button.
  • The software starts finding solution. The progress of the solver is displayed below the solution box along with the message "Solver Running ... ". As the search progresses, the software displays the found solutions in the solution box one below the other. Once search is completed, progress displays the message " Solver action completed". If you want to stop the solver action at any time during the running process, you may press the "STOP" button.
  • Now try typing another equation on the equation box. A few sample equations as well as syntax for constructing equations are given at the end of this page.

  • Let us type tan(x) = 0
  • Set range for finding solutions as From x = 0 To x = 30
  • Set precision as 6 decimal places
  • Click "Find Solutions" button.
  • The software starts finding solution and the final solution display reads like the following.

    x = 0
    x = 3.141593
    x = 6.283185
    x = 9.424778
    x = 12.566371
    x = 15.707963
    x = 18.849556
    x = 21.991149
    x = 25.132741
    x = 28.274334

  • You may notice that it has returned solutions in the range of 0 to 30 only. Also the solutions are displayed with a precision of 6 digits.
  • All the equations typed by you, are stored in the equation combo box. Hence you need not re-type a recently typed equation, instead, you click the down arrow in the equation box and select the required equation. To clear the history of equations typed, press the "Clear history" button. Please note that, this action will not delete the default equations set in the software itself.

Solving Options :

  • Range for finding solutions: Here you have to set a lower and upper value for ' x '. The solver will be searching for solutions only in the range prescribed. Broader the precision, longer will be the duration for solving.

  • Precision : Here you have to select the precision required in number of decimal places. You can set any precision ranging from 2 decimals to 10 decimals. Higher the precision, longer will be the duration for solving.

  • Search depth : You can set a desired search depth for finding solution by moving the slider to any position. The default position is normal depth, which is sufficient to solve most of the regular equations. If you set for a deeper search, the solver does an enhanced search, but it will consume more time to solve.

Sample Equations:

The following are a few examples of equations you can try solving.

Mathematical ExpressionWay of typing the equation
sin(x) = 0.6sin(x) = 0.6
x² + 3x = 2x^2 + 3*x = 2
2x² + 5x = sin(x)2*x^2 + 5*x = sin(x)
(x² - 4) / x = 2(x^2 - 4) / x = 2
sin(π/3) . sin(x) = 0.1sin(pi/3) * sin(x) = 0.1
2x³ + 5x² - 31x - 2 = 02*x^3 + 5*x^2 - 31*x - 2 = 0

Sample result of f(x) = Sin(x) or y = Sin(x)

How to start with Triangle solver software ?

  • Open Genius Maker software and click "Triangle Solver" button. It opens the Triangle Solver window as shown above.
  • On the left side panel, you will see 6 parameter boxes meant for 3 sides and 3 angles of triangle.
  • The convention for naming the sides and angles are as given below.

Solve Any Triangle

  • Just enter any 3 known parameters out of 6 parameters. For example, let us enter the following values.
    • Side a = 10
    • Side c = 9
    • Angle A = 70°
  • Cilck "Solve" button.
  • Now we can see that the software solves for the triangle computes and displays the 3 parameters, which have not entered as below.
    • Side b = 8.414397
    • Angle B = 52.250479°
    • Angle C = 57.749521°
  • You may see that the solved triangle getting drawn in the right side panel to the exact proportion.
  • You may use "Clear side data" button to erase the displayed values for sides and "Clear angle data" button to erase the displayed values for angles.
  • Important note : If you enter more than the 3 parameters, the software will take only the first 3 parameters and the rest will be ignored. For instance, if you enter values for "side a", "side c", "angle A" and "angle B", then the values for "side a", "side c" and "angle A" only will be taken into account and the "angle B" value will be ignored and over-written by the calculated value.

  • Special cases:

    • When you enter values for all 3 angles and do not specify the value for any side, it is a mathematically indeterminate problem with infinite number of solutions. In such a case the software will assume a value of unity for side c and then solves the triangle. A pop-up message will inform you regarding this assumption.

Additional Features:

  • Perimeter and Area : The software computes for the perimeter and area of the triangle also and they are displayed below the input boxes.

  • Print : If you want to take a printout of the triangle, it is easy. Just click the "Print" button on top. It opens the Printer dialog. Select options for printer, paper orientation and number of copies etc and then click print.

  • Save : If you want to save the triangle as an image, you can do so by clicking the "Save" button on top. It opens the Save dialog. Select a suitable location and name for the file and then click "Save".
